Industrial Devolution

Workshop
2022 - ONGOING

Frustrated by our disconnect with making and curious about the growing distance between consumers and manufacturing, Ruben Warnshuis set about to remove complexity from shoe production by devolving the process in a workshop where anyone can weave shoes from rope, using looms and moulds.

Ropetopia

An search of the shape of ropemaking
2019

How would our object look like if they would be made out of rope? By putting constructive steel elements through a rope braiding machine this project became a research in the shape language of rope objects. By exploring how rope joints, planes and volumes could look like and how they are constructed a new series of objects is created

Reclaim the sidewalk

Creating a sense of belonging
2020

Reclaiming the sidewalk is a research and series of objects to claim the sidewalk for personal use. The project was started by my curiosity of why some streets are more anonymous and others are very personal and involved. the purpose of the project is to subtlety guide residents to also live outside their house and increase the social cohesion of neighborhoods and the experience of home in the public space.

HANDWEAVING
SUCKS

Frustration based sollutions
2019
Handweaving sucks is a research project about weaving that derived from my personal frustration of how long it takes to create small samples of handwoven textiles. It is difficult to forecast how different yarns, colours and patterns interact with each other. The best thing is to just to experiment with them!

Industrial Devolution

2022

An continuation of Industrial Devolution, in collaboration with the Schoenenmuseum Waalwijk. Furthering my knowledge of footwear. The 1.5 workshop has been evolved to a more practical workshop and a series of shoes that are more durable and comfortable. The 1.5 generation makes use of classic techniques and modern shoemaking methods. The process mostly focuses on gaining experience and mastership in the shoemaking craft. This expertise will be used to develop ‘Industrial Develution 2.0
